My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Psalm 22:1
Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord, and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it. Psalm 22:30-31
They said, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” John 20:13
Mary Magdalen went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord.”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. John 20:18
What a difference a few verses make. On Good Friday as he is being crucified Jesus cries out “My God, my God why have you forsaken me.” Psalm 22:1. His cry of pain and sorrow are understandable, but that is not the whole story. If you read the all of Psalm 22 it ends with the promise that he will be recognized as the deliverer of the people. Jesus is our deliverer.
John 20 starts with Mary being very sad and confused. The tomb was empty. She even gets Peter and another disciple to confirm this finding for her. She remains in the garden near the tomb weeping. She is so grief stricken that she doesn’t recognize angels when they speak to her. A few verses later Jesus calls her by name. Mary’s hope and joy are renewed. She confidently leaves the garden to share the good news that Jesus lives. Oh what a difference a few verses make.
Currently we are in verses of confusion, sorrow and separation. My prayer is that our story will change in time to one of hope. Many are working to find a vaccine for the Covid-19 Corona virus. Now we are frightened and grieving. My prayer is that all will find hope in the risen Christ and in time we will gather together in joyous worship. Oh what a difference that will be.
In the meantime, we still can be the church and worship in our homes. Please check our website www.stpetersowensville.com daily for updates. I am trying to keep it fresh. It is also the best place to post resources and information for our church. Remember that God loves us and walks with us always. Jesus is the true king of this world who saves us and gives us life.
This is our Schedule for today and Easter Sunday:
Good Friday: The wooden cross from the Sanctuary will be placed outside. You may stop by and place rocks or nails or other symbols at the foot of the cross. Worship at Home for Good Friday has been posted on our website. There is a Good Friday Tenebrae Podcast
Easter Sunday: This will begin at 6:30am in the St. Peter’s UCC Cemetery. I will try to Facebook Live stream a short prayer service from the cemetery. Some have asked about joining me in the cemetery. If they remain in their cars for a drive-in service, I think that would be okay. Since the forecast is for thunderstorms on Sunday morning, being in your car would be for the best.
A podcast with music, prayer and a meditation will be posted on our website and shared on Facebook. A Worship at Home for Easter 2020 resource is on our website. You may use this bulletin while you listen to the podcast. The prayers and meditation will be placed on the website after the podcast has been made available. You may wish to place flowers by the wooden cross outside the church.
