The Children’s Sermon
You’ll Need:
● Song: “Five Little Ducks”

● Something to play the song on
Do This:
SAY: This morning we’re going to sing a song together. Some of you may know the
song; it’s called "Five Little Ducks." There is a part of the song where the mother
duck says, "quack, quack, quack, quack." When you hear that part, let’s all sing
together and quack our hands. (Show kids how to make beaks with their hands.)

Five Little Ducks:

Five little ducks went out one day,
Over the hill and far away;
Mother duck said, "Quack, quack, quack, quack." (Quack hands.)
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks went out one day,
Over the hill and far away;
Mother duck said, "Quack, quack, quack, quack." (Quack hands.)
But only three little ducks came back.

Three little ducks went out one day,
Over the hill and far away;
Mother duck said, "Quack, quack, quack, quack." (Quack hands.)
But only two little ducks came back.

Two little ducks went out one day,
Over the hill and far away;
Mother duck said, "Quack, quack, quack, quack." (Quack hands.)
But only one little duck came back.

One little duck went out one day,
Over the hill and far away;
Mother duck said, "Quack, quack, quack, quack." (Quack hands.)
But none of the five little ducks came back.

Sad mother duck went out one day,
Over the hill and far away;
The sad mother duck said "Quack, quack, quack, quack." (Quack hands.)
And all of the five little ducks came back.

This song is so sweet! It shows how much the mother duck loved her little ones.
Each time the little ducks went out, one of them got lost. Finally the mother duck
had lost all of her little ones -- but she never gave up -- she kept calling them! Do
you think mother duck would have been satisfied if one, two, three, or even four of
the little ducks had come back? I don't think so. I think mother duck would have
kept calling, "Quack, quack, quack, quack," until "ALL five of the little ducks came
back!"

This story is a lot like the love that Jesus has for His children. The Bible tells us that
one day Jesus looked over the city of Jerusalem and wept. He said, "Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen
gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing."
Jesus wanted the people of Jerusalem to come to Him so He could shelter and
protect them, like a mother hen protects her chicks. But the people were not
willing to go to Him.

Even though Jerusalem rejected Jesus, He never stopped calling His children. If
only SOME of Jesus’ children come back, He won’t stop calling. If ALMOST all of His
children come to Him, He still won’t stop calling. The Bible teaches us that Jesus
loves His children so much that He won't stop calling until ALL of His children come
back. He may be calling some of you today.

PRAY: Dear Jesus, thank You for loving us so much that You keep calling us to come
to You. Amen.

Bible Interactive Experience
You’ll Need:
● A Bible
● A large sheet or a parachute

Do This:
● Open your Bible to Luke 13:31-35.
● Invite kids to sit with you under the sheet or parachute, so that you’re covered
by the fabric.
● Read the Bible passage.
● Turn your Bible to Psalm 91:5 and read that passage as well.

SAY: Jesus cried out for His children to come to Him. Even when they didn’t, Jesus
was not scared away by Herod, who wanted to kill Him. Jesus said He would
continue to drive out demons and perform miracles because He loves His children
so much. Jesus will stop at nothing to protect them.

ASK:
● How is Jesus like a mother hen?
● Tell about a time you felt protected by Jesus.

Under His Wing
You’ll Need:
● “Under His Wing” video

● Something to play the video

Do This:
Show the video.
ASK:
● What did you think about Bop’s choice?
● How is this story like what happens when we don’t follow Jesus?

Beaks and Feathers Snacks
You’ll Need:
● Napkins - 1 per child
● Plates - 1 per child
● String Cheese - 1 per child
● Cheez-It crackers

Get Ready: Have kids clean their hands.

Do This:
Follow these steps for the “Beaks and Feathers” snacks:
● Give each child a plate, a napkin, a string cheese, and a scoopful of Cheez-It
crackers.
● Starting at the bottom of the cheese stick, invite kids to peel small strips from
their string cheese, leaving the peels attached to the base so the cheese starts
to look like a feather.
● Have kids place a Cheez-It cracker in their mouth at a diagonal to look like a tiny,
triangular beak.
● Invite kids to enjoy their “Beaks and Feathers.”

SAY: Great job making your “Beaks and Feathers” snacks! When we choose to
follow Jesus, we can count on Him to be our protector and our provider. He calls
out for us to come to Him. Under His wings, we are His children, and we are safe.

ASK:
● Why do you think Jesus wants us to come to Him?
● How does it make you feel to know that Jesus protects you?

Protective Wings
You’ll Need:
● Under His Wing How-to video

● Paper plates - 1 per child
● Scissors
● Craft feathers
● Markers
● Glitter glue
● A stapler
● Sewing elastic

Get Ready: Before class, cut 3-inch strips of elastic, two for each child. Cut paper
plates in half.

Do This: Have kids follow these steps to make the “Protective Wings” craft:
● Give each child two paper plate halves.
● Invite kids to decorate the paper plate halves to look like wings using markers,
feathers, and glitter glue.
● Allow time to dry.
● Staple a 3-inch piece of elastic to the inside of each wing.
● Invite kids to slip their hands through the elastic and flap their wings around the
classroom.

SAY: Like a mother hen gathers her chicks beneath her wings to protect them,
Jesus willingly gave Himself to save His children even though they had rejected
Him time and time again. Take your “Protective Wings” craft home as a reminder
that Jesus wants to gather you in His arms to care for you and protect you.

PRAY: Father, we thank You that Jesus loves and protects us like a mother hen
protects her chicks. Keep us near Jesus and help us never stray from Him. In
Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
