The Children’s Sermon
Get Ready: Before class, think of some different roles of people in preteens’ lives,
such as teachers, musicians, coaches, pastors, dancers, and dentists.
Do This:
SAY: We’re going to start off today with a game called 20 Questions. (Invite kids to
share if they’ve played it before.) In this game of 20 Questions, you’ll be guessing the
roles of different people. That may mean jobs or other roles that involve hobbies
or extracurricular activities. You all can ask me up to 20 yes-or-no questions. If
you guess the person, you all get a point. If I stump you, then I get a point. Ready?
Choose a role and then invite kids to take turns asking questions. Tally the number of
questions until they guess correctly or get to 20. Give kids one minute to try to guess
correctly after they’ve reached 20 questions.
Announce who earned the point, and then ask them how they knew who you were
thinking of.
Let kids take turns repeating the same process with new roles they think of, if you’d
like.
This game makes me think of our Bible passage for today. Jesus was teaching His
friends, the disciples. He was getting ready to go to heaven and He wanted them
to be ready, too. He told them, “You can’t go where I’m going. But when I leave, I
want you to love others as I have loved you. Then they’ll know you’re My disciples.”
Like in our game, you knew who the person was because [remind kids of the
actions or characteristics they learned about a certain role during the game].
Jesus says when we love others like He loved others, they’ll know we’re His
disciples. Would you like people to know you’re Jesus’ disciple? We’ll think more
about that today.
PRAY: God, we want others to know we’re Jesus’ disciples because we want them
to experience your love and forgiveness, too. Help us to love others like Jesus
loved. In Jesus’ name, amen.
