Call to Worship*

  1. Gathering in this sacred place
we anticipate new wonders each week.
All: Wherever two or three are gathered to worship,
    a holy spirit is present.

One: Open our eyes to witness
the fantastic love and wondrous joy waiting to be revealed,
even this day, even in this place.
All: We will want to linger and camp in this sanctuary
but when we leave today may our hearts be open
to all the wonders of God’s beautiful world.

Passing of the Peace (Smile and wave to those around you.)

Sermon: Seeing the True Light

Have you ever noticed someone in a new way or new light? That ordinary person who turns out to be able to do the extraordinary. This is popular theme in fairy tales or superhero stories. That mild-mannered reporter turns out to be Superman. That nerdy kid on the bus is really Spiderman. The old guy living in the desert on Tatooine is really the powerful Jedi Knight Obi Wan Kenobi in the first Star Wars movie, “A New Hope.” These heroes like to keep their identity a secret. It is only when needed that their true selves are revealed.

Jesus is portrayed a bit like this in Mark’s Gospel. He is often telling people not to share just who he is. Even his disciples are confused about his purpose and identity. Jesus is that carpenter’s son from Nazareth who speaks with such authority that even evil spirits listen. Jesus is just an ordinary person who shares the good news of God’s love and redemption and does a bit of healing and feeding too. He even falls asleep on stormy boat rides across the Galilean Sea.

His disciples get confused and troubled when he talks about dying and being raised from the dead on the third day. Peter even argues with him about such crazy talk. To them Jesus is a human leader who does amazing things through the power of God.

Then one day, Jesus takes Peter, James and John for a hike up a mountain. Up on that mountain Jesus was transfigured before them. Transfigured means that they saw Jesus in a new way and in a new light. In fact, he was so filled with light that he shone with it. Then the heavenly realm opens up and Jesus is talking to two major historical and religious figures, Elijah and Moses. Still thinking in worldly ways, Peter offers to build a shelter for Jesus and his companions.

Then a cloud filled with light envelopes them and God speaks, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” Filled with terror and awe, Peter, James and John drop to the ground. Wouldn’t you?

For many of us, Jesus and the stories about Jesus have become so ordinary that we forget just who Jesus is. Like good old Ben Kenobi in the desert on Tatooine, we treat Jesus as an ordinary part of our lives. Yes, Jesus is there and loves us, but the wow factor is not always present.

So, let’s take a moment and think about Jesus as that truly awesome being that he is. Jesus shines with the heavenly light of God. That light of which is the good news for the world. Imagine Jesus shining with the brightest light that you have ever seen. A light so powerful that you are forced to drop your head and look at the ground. Sit for a moment in the wonder and awe of God. Let yourself be amazed.

Then slowly open your eyes and realize that a bit of that light is reflected within you. A bit of the light of God can shine out of you. Yes, you! Take time to ask God how your piece of God’s light can shine in this world. A kind word to someone who needs it. A pray for those who are sick and troubled. A cup of soup and a smile to a hungry person. Yes, you too are revealed to be a person who can be a shining reflection of God’s light. Go and be awesome!

Prayers of the People

Awesome God who shines light into our lives be with us as we pray. May we take time today and every day to be changed by your love as you reveal yourself to us in new and different ways. Help us to be rays of light into the lives of others. May we share the good news to those who need it. May your love and light shine in the shadow places of this world. Places where there is confusion, violence, famine and illness. Be with all those we pray for in our hearts. In Jesus name. Amen.
