The Children’s Sermon
You’ll Need:
● “Jesus’ Face" handout - one per child
Do This:
SAY: Stare at the four dots in the center of this picture until I say stop. (Count to 30
slowly.) Now, close your eyes and wait for an image to appear. What did you see?
Did you see an image of Jesus? Some people see the image of Jesus and some
don't. It’s just like it is in real life. Some people don’t see Jesus because they’re
looking for Him in the wrong places.
Have kids follow the motions to help tell what happened.
That is what happened in our Bible verses today. Early on Sunday morning, while it
was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb where Jesus had been buried.
(Walk in place.) She found that the stone was rolled away from the entrance. She
ran (Run in place.) and found Simon Peter and another disciple, John. She told
them, (Cup hands around mouth.) "They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb,
and I don’t know where they have put Him!"
Peter and John started out for the tomb. (Run in place.) They were both running,
but John outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He stooped and looked in and
saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in. (Bend down.) Then Simon
Peter arrived and went inside. He noticed the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head
was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. Then John saw and
believed (Put hands over heart.) -- for until then, they still hadn’t understood the
Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. Then they went home.
Mary stayed behind, weeping. (Pretend to cry.) As she knelt down and looked inside
the tomb, she saw two angels dressed in white. (Kneel.) They asked her why she
was crying. She told them she didn't know where they had taken Jesus. (Hold arms
up like “I don’t know.”) Then, Mary turned and saw a man standing behind her. It was
Jesus, but Mary did not recognize Him. She thought He was the gardener. Then
Jesus called her by name and, when she heard His voice, she recognized Him.
(Show a surprised face.) After she saw that it was Jesus, she went to the disciples
and said to them, "I’ve just seen Jesus! He is alive!" (Jump up and down in
excitement.)
Some people, like Mary, Peter, and John can’t see Jesus because they are looking
for Him in a grave or on a cross. He isn’t there! He is risen and is seated at the right
hand of His Father in heaven. If you want to see Jesus, look in His Word, He will
reveal Himself to you, just as He did to Mary!
PRAY: Dear God, we thank You that Jesus, our Savior, is not in a grave. He is alive!
We serve a risen Savior! Hallelujah! In Jesus’ name, amen.
Hidden in Sight Video
You’ll Need:
● “Hidden in Sight” video
● Something to play the video
Do This:
Show them the video.
ASK:
● What was the hardest for you to see?
● Explain why you think it could have been hard to believe it was Jesus after
you had seen Him killed on a cross?
● What does Jesus’ resurrection mean to you?
Seeing Snacks
You’ll Need:
● Graham crackers - one per child
● Large marshmallows - one per child
● M&Ms candies - two per child
● Paper plates - one per child
● Napkins - one per child
● Plastic knife - one per child
Do This:
Follow these steps to make the “Seeing Snacks”:
● Give each child a paper plate, napkin, plastic knife, and a large marshmallow.
● Instruct kids to use the plastic knife to cut their large marshmallows in half.
● Next, give the kids a graham cracker and direct them to put the two halves of
their marshmallows on their cracker to look like eyes.
● Next, give them each two M&Ms and have them place the candies in the middle
of each marshmallow as pupils.
● Enjoy.
ASK:
● Tell about one way you’ve seen Jesus in your life, or how you’d like to see
Him.
SAY: Mary knew Jesus had been killed and when He wasn’t in the tomb she was
confused and upset, and then she heard her name. She saw Jesus face to face.
The impossible had been done. Jesus defeated death and was fully alive in her
sight. Jesus will show Himself to us, too!
Clay Tombs
You’ll Need:
● Air-dry clay
● Toothpicks - one per child
● Paper
● Pens - one per child
● Paper plate - one per child
● Glue
Do This:
To make the “Clay Tombs,” have kids follow these steps:
● Give each child a paper plate and a lump of clay.
● Invite kids to form an empty tomb with a large stone rolled to the side out of
their clay.
● After their tombs are complete, give them a toothpick and a small piece of
paper.
● Instruct kids to write “I’ve Seen Jesus” on the paper and glue one end to the
toothpick.
● To finish their tomb, ask kids to stick the toothpick into the clay tomb.
SAY: Your empty tomb creations are amazing. The best thing about them is they
remind us that Jesus is no longer dead. Our Savior is alive. We can be confident of
this because Jesus appeared to many after He was raised from the dead and their
lives would never be the same.
Jelly Bean Prayers
You’ll Need:
● Multi-Colored Jelly Beans
● A large sheet of paper or white board
● A marker or dry erase marker
Get Ready: Write the following on the paper or white board for kids to reference as
they pray:
● Red = thank Jesus
● Yellow = you
● Green = family
● Purple = pastor or teacher
● Other = choice
Do This:
SAY: Today we are going to use jelly beans to pray. For a red jelly bean, you’ll thank
Jesus for what He did on the cross. For a yellow jelly bean, you’ll pray for yourself.
For green jelly beans, pray for one of your family members. For purple jelly beans,
pray for your pastor or your teacher. Any other color, you get to pick what you
pray for.
● Give kids a small handful of jellybeans and instruct them to follow your
color/prayer assignments.
● This prayer activity may be more effective in small groups.
PRAY: Dear God, thank You for Jesus. Thank You for the cross and thank You that
Jesus is alive. Help us to see You each day. Help us to share Your love with others.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
